Pantone Colour of the Year: Mocha Mousse

The colour experts have spoken and the Pantone Colour of the Year 2025 is……Mocha Mousse. This annual choice is described as a colour that ‘captures the global zeitgeist’, and is a shade we expect to see in fashion, advertising and in our homes.

Pantone has decided that Mocha Mousse conveys our desire for connection, comfort and harmony, and we have to agree. Mocha Mousse is a mid-brown colour infused with richness and depth - think coffee, chocolate and praline.

    A new neutral

This isn’t a dark brown, however. Mocha Mousse can be classed as one of the new neutrals, up there with olive green and greige. There is definitely an earthy quality to Mocha Mousse that allows it to be used liberally within the home.

It’s possible to paint an entire room in Mocha Mousse and not feel overpowered. Any blocks of colour can be broken up with house plants and wall art. The hue can also be offset by the use of natural materials, pairing well with wood, stone, rattan, wicker, leather and linen.

    Paper shortcuts

Choosing to use Mocha Mousse doesn’t have to be confined to paint. You could create a stunning feature wall in a living room, papering just one surface with a bold, abstract print featuring shades of brown. If you want your decoration to be more temporary, why not hang curtains that feature a rich brown check or stripe? Home décor specialist Spoonflower has an official collaboration with Pantone, with a collection of amazing Mocha Mousse-inspired wallpapers and fabrics. Browse its website for inspiration or order some products as it offers shipping to the UK.

Mocha Mousse is an exceptionally good colour to use when decorating bedrooms as it is warm and inviting. Complement with other soft, muted tones that are easy-on-the-eye - chalky whites, rich creams and dusky pinks. Be guided by Mocha Mousse when choosing soft furnishings, such as bedlinen, rugs and window blinds. Add in cream voile drapes and some ambient lighting, and the result is an almost ethereal atmosphere with a cocooning property.

    Go big with brown

The Pantone Colour of the Year is, however, neutral enough to influence big ticket purchases. A sofa or armchair upholstered to match Mocha Mousse will feel decadent and homely. You can up the design anti by opting for a tactile velvet or corduroy. If you’re worried it may feel like you're sinking into a bath of chocolate (is that a bad thing?), add a chunky cable knit throw in a milky white, or some scatter cushions in burnt umber and copper.

After years of bold, bright Pantone Colour of the Year choices, such as Very Peri and Vivid Magenta, it’s great to see a choice that can be used in interior design without restraint. Earlier this year, it became apparent that home buyers aren’t that fussed about finding the ‘perfect’ property. A Rightmove survey of 34,000 home movers found 73% of those leaving rented accommodation viewed fixer uppers as a more affordable route to property ownership. Additionally, 73% of existing homeowners wanted to buy a property that needed work in order to create their dream home.

Described by House Beautiful as ‘the secret to a calm and clutter-free home’, biophilic decluttering is a trend we can really get behind. It merges two interior aspects that are hugely important when selling a home – presenting a property that’s clear and streamlined, and dressing a home so it is visually appealing.
